What Is Ferrofluid?

A magnetic liquid born from physics — and the science that makes Glowbe's visual display possible.

Ferrofluid is a magnetic liquid composed of microscopic iron oxide particles — each around 10 nanometres in size — suspended in a carrier fluid. Under normal conditions, it flows and pours like any liquid.

When exposed to a magnetic field, the behaviour changes entirely: the particles align with the field lines and the fluid deforms, forming precise geometric spikes, ridges, and wave patterns.
